Nautical Textures Gallery 1

Since my childhood I have been drawn to things nautical; so, for me, fishing boats provide a rich, visual environment for the the photographic exploration of texture. Their surfaces are exposed to the weathering elements of sea water, salt spray, wind, rain, and sun -- all of which transform their surfaces in ways subtle and not so subtle. They are painted in a variety of colors at the whim of their captains and owners. Because these are working boats, their paint and lettering is frequently applied in a slapdash manner. Their hulls experience random cuts, scrapes, abrasions, and bumps which can expose bits and pieces of various layers of paint down to bare metal or wood. Sheer (longitudinal deck curvature in a boat) and the general shape of the hull contribute to many angles being other than 90 degrees which adds further interest to images.

Nautical Textures: Reflections

Because boats are meant to be in water, reflection becomes yet another element in the visual environment.
